The Best Drugstore Makeup
Based on my personal experience I’m rounding up a list of some of the best drugstore makeup for women I have ever used. Brand like Maybelline, Loreal Paris, NYX, ELF, Rimmel London, Milani and so much more! When it comes to buying makeup I love having a variety of both high end and drugstore makeup. Some people have the perception that because it’s cheap, its no good but they are so wrong. Well, with the exception of a few, there are some budget-friendly drugstore brands that I swear by.
What Is Drugstore Makeup?
Drugstore makeup as the name suggests refers to makeup that you can purchase at drugstores, department and convenience stores. However, these are not the only places they can be found, as they are also sold online by retailers such as Amazon, Sephora, and Ulta. They are not considered to be high-end or luxury and therefore do not cost a lot of money.
Have you ever gone to the supermarket or a department store and when you got to cashier you saw a heap of makeup on the counter, near the cash register? Those are perfect examples of drugstore makeup although the brands may not be popular.

What Are Drugstore Makeup Brands?
Here are some of the best drugstore makeup brands that I use:
- Cover Girl
- Wet & Wild
- LA Girl
- Black Radiance
- LA Colors
- City Color
Those are some of the best cheap drugstore makeup brands that you will find in almost every department store or on Amazon.
Benefits Of Using Drugstore Makeup Over Pro
- They are easily accessible and can be found on almost every corner store
- Very economical, therefore, you do not need to think twice before committing to purchase
- You can achieve almost the same look as you would with a higher end brand
- Does not require to have a lot of knowledge on how to apply it properly as they are easy to use
- Wear them every day and save your high-end makeup for special occasions
The Best Drugstore Makeup 2020
What Is The Best Drugstore Foundation?
In my opinion one of the best drugstore foundation is the Fit Me Liquid Foundation by Maybelline. Every other person I know has used the Maybelline fit me liquid foundation in matte poreless or dewy smooth. Over 3,000 customers have reviewed it on Amazon with a 4.5 out of 5 ratings.
The only thing I don’t like about this product is the way the bottle head is. It’s not really about the product itself but rather the packaging. Its hard not to get product everywhere when you have to pour it from the head like that. Maybelline should have put a little more thought into their packaging. A lot of product comes out all at once and things can get messy if you are in a rush or not careful. They should really consider making pumps which would be more manageable.
FIT ME MATTE +PORELESS FOUNDATION BY MAYBELLINE NEW YORK
It took me a very long time before I went out and purchased this Fit Me Matte Poreless foundation. Although I had seen enough reviews to persuade my purchasing decision I still decided to wait. Now, this foundation has officially been added to my daily foundation collection. Its great when you can find a reasonably priced product that gives similar results to a higher-end product. In this way, I can use my expensive makeup on special occasions only.
- full coverage
- costs less than $15
- thick consistency
- bottle does not come with a nozzle or pump
LA Girl Pro Concealer
What is a makeup routine without highlighting, contouring and concealing because I honestly do not know? This that is what I use the LA Girl Pro Concealer for. Lighter shades for highlighting, foundation match colour for concealing and a darker shade for contouring. However, for contouring, I prefer to use a light-weight powder or a contouring powder palette.
Also, I use the lighter shades to clean up my brows after filling them in and over my eyes as an eye shadow primer. It’s such a useful multi-purpose product and a staple for even the most popular beauty bloggers and YouTubers. Back in 2016 when I had just started blogging I wrote about it here as one of my everyday favourites.

Maybelline Volum’ Express The Colossal Washable Mascara
While some people prefer The Big Shot Blackest Black Washable Mascara, I love the Volum’ Express. Personally, I have used both and they produce more or less the same results. Which is black, long and full lashes without being able to come off easily.
Black Radiance Creme Contour Palette – Medium to Dark
If you are a woman of colour and have a hard time finding contour palettes then I highly recommend this Black Radiance palette.
Maybelline Makeup Eyestudio Gel Eye Liner
For those of us who have a hard time applying liquid liner, the Maybelline eyestudio is a great alternative. Jet black and waterproof so it’s extremely difficult to come off on its own.
NYX Pro Butter Gloss
Have you ever tried any of NYX’s lipglosses? They are so creamy and nice, not too thick nor too thin which makes them irresistible.
Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Single Eyeshadow
Single eyeshadows are the best for travelling and this beautiful purple Milani eyeshadow is a must-have.
Maybelline Baby Lips Moisturizing Lip Balm
A must have for my makeup bag is this Maybelline Baby Lips moisturizing lip balm.
NYX Studio Perfect Primer
Using a primer on your face before applying makeup not only gives you a flawless finish but also protects your pores from getting clogged.
L’Oreal Paris Colour Riche Lipstick
L’oreal lipstick, it doesn’t have to be this exact colour but this one is the Cinnamon Toast shade. Such a beautiful colour and great for this Spring season.

Maybelline Master Chrome Metallic Highlighter Powder
A metallic highlighter that has almost the same effect as a high-brand and highly rated by many.
E.l.f. Eyebrow Kit, Medium
E.L.F. Eyebrow kit is one of the best alternatives to the Anastacia Beverly Hills as well as this Nyx Eyebrow Powder.
Milani Baked Blush
For a matte shimmery highlight finish, I recommend getting the Milani baked blush and this one is called Luminoso.
Rimmel Pro Eyebrow Pencil
Defining eyebrow pencil by Rimmel for persons who may prefer a pencil as opposed to the brow kits.
NYX Pro Setting Spray
Not many people use setting sprays. However, if you are one of those who uses them, be sure to include NYX setting spray in your makeup kit.
OTHER BEST DRUGSTORE MAKEUP WORTH TRYING
THE CITY MINI PALETTE BY MAYBELLINE X SHAYLA
This is my first city mini palette from Maybelline. Normally I do not give into the makeup hype and collaborations between Brands and Bloggers that I see every other day. However, the main reason why I bought this palette is because Makeup Shayla is one of my favourite Beauty Bloggers. With that being said, I just had to get it as a way of supporting a fellow successful black woman. When the hype was over and I was able to purchase it online, I had already seen reviews about it that was even more convincing.
Knowing Shayla, I was not surprised when I had seen the colours she chose for this palette. If you are also following her you would also know that it contains some of her favourite shades. Not only that but they are colours that can give you both a day look and a smokey eye look (another one of her go-to looks). Four of the 6 shades are shimmery and the other 2 are flat. All of the colours are highly pigmented and that is why I love this palette so much.
SWATCHES OF THE CITY MINI PALLETTE
- budget friendly; cost less than $15
- highly pigmented
- great for travelling due its compactness
- multiple makeup looks can be achieved
- no fall-outs when applying
Maybelline and Shayla did a good job in putting this together and I honestly do not have any cons. In my opinion it was well thought-out and properly executed.
INFALLIBLE PRO-MATTE FOUNDATION BY L’OREAL PARIS
Another holy grail foundation without the scary price tag and works just as good as high-end. L’oreal infallible foundation is longwear and it gives a full coverage face. A lot have been said about this foundation by L’oreal and the consensus seems to be all positive reviews.
First of all this foundation is in the shade 109 which is a bit lighter than my skin tone. Secondly, I use it mainly for highlighting below my eyes or sometimes mix it with my YSL foundation which is a bit dark for my complexion.
There were a few times when I did apply this Infallible Pro-matte foundation on its own just to see how it works. You should also know that it is very difficult to come with just water. I suggest using makeup remover wipes, cleansing water, deep cleansing oil or exfoliating scrub. Depending on your skin or the finish you desire, there is also a Pro Glow foundation.
- reasonably priced for a professional product
- medium to full coverage
- a little bit goes a long way
- nice thick consistency
- can be used as a highlight as well
Maybe in the future I will purchase my shade and use it as a foundation as opposed to a highlighter. But my only problem is that I rarely use full-coverage foundations.
Best Drugstore Makeup Beauty Awards
Some of the brands even received beauty awards for being the number one choice of consumers. They also would have had great sales, customers rated them highly, and are now widely accepted as favourites. So now lets dive into why these products are classified as the best drugstore makeup.
Giorgio Armani | Shiseido Lash Curler | Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick | Estee Lauder Concealer | Sigma Brush | Nars Lipbalm | Chanel Liner | YSL Mascara | MAC Eye Shadow | MAC Foundation | Lashes | Smashbox Primer | Beauty Blender | Laura Mercier Highlighter | Clinique Moisturizer
HOW TO START A MAKEUP COLLECTION WITH THE BEST DRUGSTORE MAKEUP
Back when I started wearing makeup I had no idea how to start a makeup collection. Neither did I knew exactly what I was doing with regards to applying them. But, thanks to YouTube I was able to buy some products that were popularly used by the majority of beauty bloggers at the time.
However, looking back now I realize I wasted a lot of money buying things that were unnecessary or was unable to put to full use. What about you? Are you clueless when it comes to this area and would love to learn more? If yes, then this post is for you so let’s dive into the essentials.
Starting With Your Face
First, you would need something to protect your face from all the makeup that you will be wearing. By that, I mean a face moisturizer with an SPF and a makeup primer. Not only would they help your makeup apply smoothly, last longer without caking and give a flawless finish.
But more importantly, safeguard your face from impurities getting into and clogging your pores. I wished someone had told me this from the start but I definitely learned from my mistakes. When it comes to moisturizers and primers, the options are endless and if you are now starting I suggest going with a budget-friendly one.
FACE MOISTURIZERS & PRIMERS
Although I was not privy to all the information that is available now, I started off with this L’oreal Futur-e Day lotion for normal to dry skin which worked well.
CeraVe has an ultra-lightweight face moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid for a little more. Another one I use until this day is the Hydra Total by L’oreal and Neutrogena also has some decent ones too.
FOUNDATIONS & POWDERS: LIQUID | MOOSE | PRESSED | LOOSE
Regardless of the foundation type you choose, they all do the same job more or less, just the application and final result may differentiate a little. Pressed was my first choice and I used it independently for a long time.
Years later I switched to Maybelline matte mousse foundation and shortly after that to MAC Cosmetics.
Precisely, MAC studio fix pressed powder followed by their studio fix liquid foundation. Since then, that is all I use and I never went back to using powders by themselves.
However, if I do use a powder, it’s in a darker shade, strictly for contouring. Deciding on one of these options depends on the type of coverage you want: light, medium or full.
Some products are build-able so you can get multiple uses out of them. Ask your beauty sales agent at a pro store to recommend products for your desired look.
BEST DRUGSTORE MAKEUP: TOOLS, SPONGES & BRUSHES
You need proper tools to apply your makeup and each one has their advantages and disadvantages which I am not getting into, in this post. Different tools give you a different application so it comes down to personal preferences.
Some people prefer beauty sponges while others like to use brushes. My suggestion is to experiment with all and decide which one suits you best.
CONCEALERS, HIGHLIGHTS, CONTOURS & BLUSH
Concealers to cover up any dark circles or areas on your face you want to cover-up, which would normally be a few shades lighter than your complexion. Also, use for defining your brows or as an eye-shadow primer as well.
Highlighters for adding a glow of course and contours for narrowing areas you want to make appear smaller. Blushes for completing the face, giving it a nice, soft touch.
EYE & LIP PENCILS, GEL/LIQUID LINERS & MASCARA
Eye & lip pencils for lining the eyes, lips and for outlining and filling in your brows. Gel/liquid liner for lining the eyes if you prefer not to use a pencil. Mascara for giving your lashes a nice elongated, full and flattering look.
LIP GLOSS & LIPSTICKS
To finish off your face you are going to need a lip gloss or lipstick or both. Whether it is liquid, matte or sheer, that is up to you. Some days you may wish to wear one over the other or you may use them simultaneously. For instance, wearing lip gloss over a matte lipstick.
BEST DRUGSTORE MAKEUP: EYE SHADOWS & PRIMER
Having 1 or 2 palettes that have the majority of colours is essential so that you can achieve many looks from them. One preferably with natural and earthy tones and another with vibrant colours.
They can be a mixture of matte and metallic so that there will be a good balance of the two. I always recommend using an eye shadow primer when applying eyeshadows in order to make them pop and prevent fallout.
A lot of people forget this important part but its crucial that you purchase at least one exfoliating cleanser for daily use.
BEST DRUGSTORE MAKEUP: OPTIONAL ITEMS TO HAVE:
These are other items you may wish to invest in but is not necessary when now starting a collection.
Makeup remover / Remover wipes
Setting powder / Translucent powder / Finishing power (these are all the same with different names)
After you have finished building your collection you can buy more of each item as desired.
Earn Cash Back While You Shop For The Best Drugstore Makeup
You can shop any of these products through Ebates and earn cash back on all orders. If you always buy makeup then you have nothing to lose by signing up if you have not already done so. There are tons of retailers and brands on there too so it doesn’t have to be only makeup.
Well, that concludes the outline of the best drugstore makeup but be sure to let me know which ones are your favourites. Good luck creating your own collection of the best drugstore makeup on the market.1
