Quick & Easy Steps For Skin Care

It doesn’t matter if you’re a skincare newbie or experienced skin care pro. These easy steps for skin care will be applicable regardless of where you’re at in your skincare journey. A little bit about mine…

I have never really been a skin care person/junkie but now I think I am on the verge of becoming one. Simply because sometimes it can be difficult to resist the temptation of buying beauty products. Especially since new beauty brands are emerging every day.

Plus, there is always that hope that the new product could be the perfect addition to your skincare regiment that you were missing out on.

Instagram also doesn’t help. Just opening the app and seeing tons of reviews from other bloggers about skin care products is convincing enough.

But it is obvious that within recent times more people have become self-conscious about skin care. That is why it is super important to have a skincare routine that works for you and of course, goes hand in hand with the skincare products you have invested in.

So after conducting some research on skin care and from my own personal experiences with products that worked and didn’t work for my skin, I was able to put together the following 20 steps for skin care that promotes healthy, clear skin.

20 Steps For Skin Care – The Best Remedies For Clear, Healthy Skin

Learn about your skin type so that you know what products works best for you

Before investing money into buying skincare products, you should have an idea of what type of products already works for your skin type. If you are not sure then it is good to learn about skin types and figure out where you land on the spectrum.

Stop running to buy products that you see on your time line before doing your research. Not because a product works for others, means that it’s going to agree with your skin.

Never-the-less, there are skincare products for you whether you have normal, dry, oily, sensitive skin or combination (both oily and dry skin).

Another important factor to consider is the product ingredients and if it contains allergens that could cause a reaction or breakouts.

Wash your hands before washing your face

I know it sounds like an obvious thing to do but not everyone practices proper steps for skin care. Additionally, avoid touching your face with your bare hands unnecessarily.

The dirt and germs from your hands can easily be transferred to your face which causes acne.

Use makeup remover wipes or a liquid remover to take off your makeup and do not sleep with your makeup on overnight

Having to remove makeup after getting home late, a long day or after an evening out can be daunting. But if you want healthier skin, it is worth making an effort to practice good steps for skin care.

When it comes to taking off makeup, it is a good practice to use a makeup remover or makeup remover wipes, followed by washing your face.

Using a makeup remover and not washing your face afterwards, and vice versa, does more harm than good. Most times it won’t be sufficient to remove all the makeup buildup by just completing one step.

If for some reason you don’t have makeup remover or wipes, that is not an excuse. You can use an alternative like micellar water. There are several benefits of using micellar water which you can read more about here.

Lastly, you should never go to sleep with makeup on as this causes breakouts.

Use sunscreen daily

Until a few years ago I was not aware of how important it was to use sunscreen everyday. I used to think that I only needed to use sunscreen before going out in the sun. Or prior to spending an excessive amount of time outside like on beach and pool days.

Even when wearing makeup, you should use a moisturizer or foundation that has an SPF 15 or higher so that your skin is always protected from UVB rays.

Do not workout with makeup on

Do you work out with makeup on? By now you are probably rolling your eyes at some of this stuff but I used to be guilty of wanting to look cute at the gym. However, I quickly learnt that it was an unhealthy ritual for my skin.

Once I stopped doing that, my face improved a lot since then. Instead of makeup, apply some moisturizer and sunscreen before heading to the gym.

Drink enough water so that you are properly hydrated

I’m sure you already know that dehydration causes breakouts, so drinking a lot of water is essential to having clear, healthy skin.

Change your pillow case at least once a week

In order to minimise the excess oil from your hair getting on your face, you should try to change your pillow case at least once a week.

Use rosewater to mist your face

Rosewater can be used as a facial cleanser or toner. You just need to rinse your face with rose water after washing with your normal cleanser.

Recently, I have found out what a gem rosewater is to your skin. According to Healthline, some of the health benefits of rosewater for skin include:

  • Helps with skin irritation
  • Reduces redness
  • Has anti-aging properties, amongst many other advantages

Never apply makeup right after getting a facial

Avoid putting on makeup or any facial product for at least 6 hours after getting a facial for maximum benefits. Applying makeup right after you’ve deep cleaned your pores will undo all of your hard work.

Exfoliate your skin everyday if possible, especially if you wear makeup often

It may not be sufficient to use a cleanser for getting rid of all the dirt on your face. Especially if you use makeup frequently, you’ll want to exfoliate a couple of times per week to get beyond the surface.

Ensure that the skin care products you are using do not contain alcohol

Paula’s Choice Skincare explains it best: Alcohol denat or denatured alcohol is part of a group of alcohols that have low-molecular weights and can be drying and sensitising for skin.

Alcohol denat in skincare is bad news for your skin. It’s harsh nature can strip your skin of moisture and dry out your skin over time, all in all it is best avoided.

Keep your stress levels low

You probably want to know what does stress have to do with steps for skin care. But stress actually causes acne, so adding exercise to your daily routine would help to decrease stress levels and prevent further breakouts.

Clean your makeup brushes at least once a week

I can’t stress enough how important it is to keep your makeup brushes clean. The makeup buildup on them causes bacteria to build up which passes on to your face and causes pimples.

To avoid that, wash your makeup brushes as often as possible and keep them stored away from dust.

Watch your diet – avoid sugary foods

High sugar drinks and foods like sodas, pastries and desserts are all foods that can greatly contribute to acne. Therefore it is necessary to cut back on sugary foods and drinks.

Keep your cellphone away from your face

As silly as this sounds it keeps away unwanted germs from getting on your face and in your pores. If you can, avoid holding your phone against your face during a call. Opt to use EarPods, a headset or on speakerphone if convenient.

Always use a daily moisturizer or makeup primer before applying makeup

For years I have been using makeup on my face without either a moisturizer or face primer. Until I found out that I have been applying makeup all wrong, which also happens to affect the health of your skin.

Occasionally take a break from wearing makeup

It is okay to take a break from wearing makeup every now and again. Your face needs a breather sometimes and will thank you for it!

Get rid of makeup over 6 months old

You should definitely check the expiry date of your beauty and skin care products. Avoid buying products that you know you won’t be able to use up within 3-6 months.

It took me a very long time before learning that makeup has an expiry date. So if you didn’t know, now you know. Now may be time to get rid of your old makeup.

Ever so often, have a facial / spa day

Last but not least, have a facial / spa day occasionally. Your regular at home skin care regiment may not necessarily get all the dirt out from your face.
