Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we have to put up with negative people and situations. That we may or may not have control over but there are ways in which we can use it to our advantage. Depending on how toxic the environment, it may take more than these suggestions in this post. Most times you have to be God filled, focused and strong-willed because if not, it can consume you. These are some of the strategies I use whenever I have to deal with negative people or in difficult situations:
Don’t Take It Personal
Usually, it is never about you but rather, the individual may be hurting, dealing with personal issues or unhappy. You have to understand that some people can not separate their personal life from their work life. As a result of this, they walk around with their baggage and other people can be affected negatively too. Once you recognize that their actions are not by any means in direct relation to you, it helps to ignore them.
Learn Their Emotional State
If you can not avoid them or the situation then learn their emotional state. So that you are better at predicting their actions so when you see the signs of them acting up, you would be better able to respond.
Read A Book
It is good to always have a book with you because you never know when you might need it. Challenge yourself to read a little bit every day and you will be surprised to see how many books you complete. Whether it is a romance novel, fiction or educational book, reading has its benefits.
Listen To Music Or Your Favourite Playlist
Music has a magical way of clearing your mind and putting you in another zone. This is exactly what you want to do if you find it hard to shift focus to something positive. Use headphones if you are at work and turn up the volume as loud as you like. But pay attention to your surroundings at work, as you do not want to be totally withdrawn. Listening to music is a great way to past time and block out negative people and bad vibes.
Reflect On Self And Evaluate
It may be the perfect opportunity to reflect on your weaknesses and implement steps on how you can improve. In some instances, the problem tends to be with ourselves and reflecting and evaluating helps you see things clearly. Perhaps you are giving off a bad vibe to your colleagues subconsciously and their behaviour could be a reaction of yours.
Do Not React
Keep calm – sometimes people do things to get a reaction out of you. Do not give in or stoop to their level by responding in a similar manner. Do not be like them or let them change you, instead let it go because you are better than that.
Start A Business
Work on that business idea you had on hold for so long. Turn that negative energy into something positive. Think about problems you face on a daily basis and about ways you can solve them. Sell online and make that dream a reality by improving other people’s lives. That is how most businesses are developed anyways.
Launch A Blog
Maybe you always wanted to start a blog but never got around to doing it. Let your present situation motivate you into getting it up and running. Build a community and blog about your experiences. Offer advice and provide solutions to persons who might be going through something similar.
At the end of the day we are all human beings and getting upset can’t be avoided sometimes. When that happens, talk to a friend or work colleague you can confide in as this helps most of the time.
Think Happy Thoughts
Reminisce on something that makes you happy like being at the beach or hanging with girlfriends. Soon enough you will be imagining that you are in that moment and your mood will change.
If all of these methods fail, silence may be the best answer. My grandmother used to always say that if you do not have anything good to say then say nothing. One of life’s best lesson is doing exactly that so that you can never be misquoted. Remember you are in charge of your emotions and you should never give the enemy that much power over you.
